In 2018, the month of October was declared Caribbean Heritage Month in Ontario, by Caribbean Women’s Society (CWS); a grassroots, membership-based nonprofit organization.
The CWS mandate is to improve quality of life for the Caribbean-Canadian community by tackling and eradicating internal and external barriers; to realize its vision of a thriving Caribbean-Canadian community.
The “Caribbean-Canadian” identity is defined as:
- all women, men and children native to or descending from Caribbean nations/regions/territories; and
- who self-identify as Caribbean or Caribbean-Canadian; and
- who reside in Canada (including newcomers, migrants and citizens).
